The Wake of The Flood
Episode 07 21 July 2026 The Longwave Home
A river floods. A town begins to rebuild.
In the aftermath, the people of Free River reckon with loss, uncertainty, change, and the stubborn human tendency to carry on. Along the way, we hear from people rebuilding their lives after disaster, recovering from addiction, caring for loved ones, pursuing social change, and facing the ordinary hardships that come with being human.
Some challenges are personal. Others belong to families, communities, and even nations. Some arrive without warning. Others unfold over years. Yet beneath them all is the same enduring question: What happens after the crisis passes?
Through stories, conversations, music, and reflection, The Longwave Home explores the many ways people persist, adapt, rebuild, and continue forward.
How do people keep going after life doesn’t go according to plan?

Every once in a while, while working on a story, you stumble across another story.
Green River is a bright green lime soda with roots stretching back more than a century. First bottled in 1919, it survived Prohibition, changing times, changing owners, and somehow managed to remain a beloved Midwestern classic. While researching this episode, we discovered that its story of adaptation and persistence fit our theme of resilience a little too well to ignore.
Truth be told, Green River has been making the trip home from Chicago in our luggage for years. So when a little unexpected sweetness showed up in the town of Free River, it felt right at home.
